This old building from 1341 is packed with history. A Waag is a building where goods were weighed and measured to promote fair trade (import and export) and where excise duties were lucrative for the city. The large scale is original and dates from 1647. In the 17th century, the guild of gold and silversmiths was housed upstairs and from 1767 on the other side the Collegium Medico Pharmaceuticum, whose facade stone is still visible at the back of the Wijnhaven. The current facade was built in 1770. Many destinations followed after the dissolution of the guilds. Once a grammar school, later a bicycle shed and from 1973 for twenty years the avant-garde Theater met de Paal, the predecessor of De Veste. Since 1999 it has been transformed into a cozy city café and restaurant, where you can enjoy hospitable food and drinks, a warm atmosphere and regular music and theater.
